CLOSE MY EYES - Sophie McKenzie This book should have a warning - Once you start reading it you cannot stop until it is finished! Totally and utterly gripping and I really could not put it down. We are first introduced to Gen and Art, a couple with very successful lives and quite a substantial wealth, in an appointment about IVF. Gen tutors in creative writing and is a published author whilst Art is MD of a huge ethical investment company. Eight years ago their firstborn daughter was stillborn and since then they have had six failed attempts at IVF. Whilst Art is desperate to try again, Gen is less than keen, all she really wants is the baby she lost so when, the following day, a stranger knocks on her door and tells her that her baby is still alive, was taken away from her at birth, Gen is horrified and appalled - how could someone make up something like that and why would they? Although common sense tells her that this is a cruel ploy to hurt her and against all advice, Gen's instinct is that this strange woman is telling the truth and when that stranger dies the next day in hit and run accident, Gen begins to think there is more to this story and that maybe her lost baby is somewhere out there.... As Gen tries to find out more about the events surrounding her child's stillbirth she is thwarted at every turn. Art and her best friend even try to convince her she is losing her mind and with no one willing to listen Gen turns to Art's estranged friend and business partner Lorcan. As more and more things happen that cannot be coincidence and Gen discovers things about her husband that she didn't know, Gen is not entirely sure who she can trust anymore but is determined to find out the truth about what happened to her baby eight years ago. This is a fast paced and compelling read. There are clues and there are red herrings and the reader is constantly questioning the behaviour of the characters - is Gen simply neurotic and having a breakdown or is Art a manipulative liar who has secrets? And where does Lorcan fit? Is he really out to help Gen or is he out to cause trouble? I guarantee that every fan of thrillers will love this book; you may not be totally sympathetic to the characters but you will be swept along by the twists and questions which this book throws up and as for the very ending..well, if it doesn't send a chill down your spine I don't know what will!
