This has to be one of THE most tense and well, thrilling, thrillers of the year. Sabine Durrant has created a scenario that intrigues and grips the imagination whilst at the same time making the heart of the reader race with anticipation and dread.
Lizzie’s husband Zach died in a car accident and one year later, on Valentine’s Day, Lizzie has made the pilgrimage to the spot where he died. As Lizzie lays her flowers at the spot where Zach died, she sees that someone has already left a bunch – for Zach. It is the start of a niggling suspicion that grows as events conspire to convince Lizzie that the husband she loved was someone she did not really know.
In between Lizzie’s narrations we get to read extracts from Zach’s diary and learn just what sort of person he was and gain an insight into the relationship between him and Lizzie.
Whilst Lizzie struggles to come to terms with her newfound knowledge of Zach, the feelings of guilt and being haunted that she has had since his death start to affect Lizzie more and more because what if her thoughts aren’t purely grief and coming to terms with her loss, what if they are real, or is she going mad?
This book really does keep the mind and imagination gripped; the reader is drawn into Lizzie’s mindset of confusion and fear as more and more is revealed about Zach. My heart was in my mouth a lot of the time as I raced through the pages fearing for Lizzie and wanting to know the outcome. The tension just mounts and mounts with added twists and surprises that keep you guessing. This is a chilling if absolutely scintillating book, superbly written that I recommend every fan of psychological thrillers read.
